Luzira Prison to be turned into a five star Hotel – Mu7 directs!

As the country grapples with scandals of quack Investors, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently directed the Minister of Internal Affairs Gen Kahinda Otafiire to operationalize a process of turning Luzira Maximum prison into Uganda International Conference Centre and commercials hub.

In a letter written by Museveni dated 10th July 2022 addressed to Gen Kahinda Otafiire and copied to the Vice President, Prime Minister, Attorney General, Minister for Works ans Transport, Minister of Lands, Museveni directed Otafiire to negotiate with Tian Tang group on the said project ans also to identify land where Luzira Prison will be re-allocated.

“I have received a letter from Tian Tang Group that are proposing to re-develop Luzira Prison into a five star Hotel with a Conference Centre and relocate the prison, at their cost at another place in the interior on a land identified by the government, I totally support the idea” Museveni letter reads. He then asked Otafire to start the negotiations with the said investor.

The government has on several occasions given out public land to investors to set up hotels. Some of the public land that has been given out includes Shimoni Demonstration school land where Kingdom Kampala Hotel was constructed, Land in Nakasero where Pearl of Africa Hotel is constructed an others.

Established in 1925, Luzira maximum Security prison is the largest prison with maximum security in Uganda sitting on 460 acres of land. It is located in Nakawa Division in Kampala and it is situated at the shores of Lake Victoria, it accommodates over 30000 inmates
