The Equal Opportunities Commission, a constitutional body mandated to fight discrimination and inequality in all its form in the country has appealed to Secondary School Head teachers to promote equality within their respective schools.

The message of the Commission was delivered on Wednesday by one of its Board Members Habib Seruwagi to the Secondary School Head teachers from Western Uganda who are undergoing a two weeks patriotism training at the National Leadership Institute-NALI in Kyankwanzi.  In his remarks, Seruwagi said that in a world where strength is derived from diversity, the pursuit of equality is not just a moral imperative, but a cornerstone for a thriving and harmonious community.

He stressed that Equal opportunities mean that every individual, regardless of their background, has the chance to succeed and fulfill their potential.

“It’s about breaking down barriers, dismantling stereotypes, and creating a level playing field where talent and hard work can truly shine. Imagine a society where everyone, irrespective of gender, race, disability, or socio-economic status, has the same chance to access education, pursue a career, and contribute to the community”, said Seruwagi.

Seruwagi indicated that at work place, equal opportunities mean that hiring decisions are based on merit rather than bias. He said education is the great equalizer, yet it often becomes a battleground for disparities.

Accordingly, he encouraged that people need to thrive for educational systems that provide quality education to every child, regardless of their background for a better investment in the future where the society benefits from the talents and ideas of all its members.

“Equal opportunities also extend to healthcare, housing, and civic participation. No one should face discrimination when seeking medical care, trying to find a place to live, or exercising their right to vote. A truly inclusive society is one where everyone can enjoy these basic rights without fear of prejudice”, Seruwagi added.

He called for collective efforts to fight discrimination and to encourage equality as the headteachers listened attentively to him.  The Vice President of Uganda Retired Major Jessica Alupo, Rt Hon Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja are some of the key dignitaries who have lectured the head teachers since the training started last week.

The head of State General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will be closing the training organized by the office of the National Patriotism Corps led by Commissioner Hellen Seku on February 3rd 2024.
